Migrating people from corporate surveillance platforms

Smugly berating people for continuing to use Facebook/Twitter/etc will never work.

Instead, we need to step up as a humble member of our micro communities. Offer to build customized alternatives tailored to their needs, offer free trainings, write customized documentation, serve as on-call technical support. And in return build enough trust that when we bring proposals to change infrastructure they will jump on board.

By micro community I mean, your family, friends, reading group, church, affinity group, or neighbors.

The number one thing that brings people to mastodon, who stick around past the first week, are people stepping up to administer instances and moderate them in an open manner. The people who join one of these that their friend runs are much more likely to want to stay.

@polymerwitch That... that lands interestingly with me, given that when I first game here, I ended up on an instance that you were running.

@not_on_pizza that is interesting. I make no claim to being great and consistent in being an exemplar of handling things this way. Burn out is real, but also I try to contribute back where and how I can, and I think that is important and much more effective than shaming people for "still being on Facebook in 2021".

I'm glad you are still here 😃

@polymerwitch @darius Hello from the admin office of my tiny Masto instance specifically for people in my profession in my part of the world.

Limited success TBH but it’s nice here.
