facebook twitter take I was just made aware of

You will never catch me advocating for holding onto oppressive systems, because their collapse would be "worse"

If the stock market were to crash it would harm my ability to ever retire a lot (my pension is tied into that). Don't care, fuck it.

People on twitter defending facebook, because it going down "causes harm". It existing causes harm.

You have to pull the knife from the wound before you can start healing.

I've been thinking about this type of thing a lot. It bugs me so much.

Yes, some socially isolated people will have negative impacts from Facebook going down. We shouldn't save Facebook.

Yes, some sex workers use Bitcoin, and sell videos with NFTs. We shouldn't save Bitcoin and NFTs.

Yes, the for profit pharmaceutical companies manufacture the HRT and mood stabilizers I need. We shouldn't save those companies.

@polymerwitch Banks are not too big to fail. We have the FDIC for a reason.

@BalooUriza @polymerwitch

Alas, our rulers decided they *were* to big to fail but it wasn't the right decision. :/

@polymerwitch the third point is funny because they’re coming up with ways to cut out pharma and make your own meds at home lolololol

using marginalized identites to shield oppressive institutions

@polymerwitch I suppose it would make a good segue to talk about dual power, if you're up to it?

Yeah, this outage really sucked for a lot of disabled people, so we should get them Mastodon alts so that the next outage sucks less

and sooner or later, a Facebook outage will last forever

@LogicalDash yeah, we definitely need to build support networks that don't leave people behind. Our spaces really need better accommodations, better accountability, and an accessibility first design mentality. I don't pretend that mastodon is the perfect spot for everyone to go to.

However, in working on helping build more sustainable community infrastructure I'm not going to prop up Facebook as it falls apart.

@polymerwitch so, I'm thinking about an analogous(?) problem in copyright

Copyright is, at best, a hack to let professional artists exist under capitalism, and all too often not even that

So I don't "support" copyright, but when Disney tries to reneg on paying Alan Dean Foster, I'm still going hard for him & his & all the other minor artists owed their pound of flesh

I don't think too badly of copypirates and nab some disney stuff for myself now and again, but when pirates act like illegally copying things is striking a blow against The Man, well

I don't take them very seriously -- remember what The Man did to what.cd, when it looked like it might be an actual threat? -- and sometimes I suspect they are at odds with actual artists!

I think even valid criticism of Facebook gets weird and victim blamey in a similar way sometimes

@LogicalDash I'm actually in the middle of writing a long form essay that is a radical critique of intellectual property under capitalism.

Something I often say is that the institution of copyright is morally bankrupt, but so is a society that doesn't provide enough for it's creators to thrive.

I would not shed a tear if the institution of copyright collapsed tonight, but I would help organize to make sure creators are supported.

@LogicalDash again though I have a lot of thoughts on the subject of intellectual property, and my critique of the "all information for everyone" goes beyond just the need to support others.

I also am quite fond of being able to not tell people things. What genitals are in my pants is not something I should be compelled to share for example. I also think being recognized for cultural creations by your community is good.

using marginalized identites to shield oppressive institutions

@LogicalDash However, the philosophical constructs of `ownership` and `property` that mold our relation to creations of the mind under capitalism is not a framework I think is worth protecting or preserving.

using marginalized identites to shield oppressive institutions

@polymerwitch In neither case do these things actually collapse "overnight"

We need to think ahead for how to sunset copyright, and the people who are loudest against copyright are not thinking that way. The loudest pirates mostly like having a lot of stuff (actual free culture people aren't like this)

On this very social network I had a weird conversation with someone who thought that the solution to The Facebook Problem was to revert to personal blogs and email for everyone. When I tried to point out that most current Facebook users never communicated either of those ways and won't know what to do with them, they didn't seem to understand the issue and repeatedly accused me of working for Facebook

using marginalized identites to shield oppressive institutions

@polymerwitch I think this most recent Facebook outage was pretty funny, I don't object if you took some schadenfreude from it either

Schadenfreude is good for preaching to the choir, which I honestly think is a good thing for an organizer to do, but it's worse than useless for outreach

using marginalized identites to shield oppressive institutions

@LogicalDash I mean, I'm not doing it for outreach. I'm doing it for joy. It would make me so happy to see Facebook switched off immediately. No phaseout that allows literal genocides to continue under its operation, but an immediate cutting of the cord. It will be hard on a lot of people. I'm not here to change their minds. But if they want to come laugh with me I'll happily take them in.
