rich people parties

I had no idea what the Met Gala was until yesterday, and I am disappointed in everyone again. Wear fab clothes. Go to museums. Sure, that's great. Rich people parties as spectacle for US culture? I'm not really a fan.

I wanna dress really fabulous and go to the library. Maybe check out the zine section. Sounds like a good time.

The library is better for dressing up imo, because if you do so at the art museum they get angry when you take photos in front of the art. At the library, if you want to take glamour shots in front of a bunch of books, the librarians are just like "hell yes!"

@polymerwitch It's extra fucked because it's one of the main ways that the Met manages to remain free to the public. Because instead of government funding they have to rely on sponsorships and rich donors

rich people parties

@darius I didn't know that 😕

rich people parties

@darius @polymerwitch gala culture is so bizarre, it’s like hundreds and hundreds of thousands of dollars spent on these parties, to get some millions in funding. rich people seem to have this sort of expectation that there will be an extravagant party for them and that’s where it all is supposed to happen. but fucking WHY 😂 at the very least, divorce the activity from fundraising/development, so we can start catching up with modern life

rich people parties

@mood @darius @polymerwitch I was on the board of a local org and the fundraising person's BIG and ONLY ASPIRATION was to have a gala and it weirded me the fuck out. Covid hit and it was really hard to get him to, you know, let it go.

rich people parties

@darius @polymerwitch having worked a lot of these events, it felt like the nonprofit struggled all year to pay for a rich people’s networking and social event, in the hopes one of their jewel encrusted baubles falls onto the collection plate. it’s so pathetic

rich people parties

@polymerwitch it overlaps enough with the entertainment industry (as in, rich and/or famous celebrities in particular, in this case) that i heard about it a while back, and i can honestly say that learning of its existence further eroded my "already hit rock bottom ages ago" belief in..well, not humanity as a whole, definitely. but "rage inducing spectacle that would be so much better as a drag ball, that should be scrapped" comes to mind

rich people parties

@polymerwitch "Replace met gala with a panel discussion and teach-in with Noname and Angela Davis", a petition

rich people parties

@polymerwitch

jkr: can i come
everybody: no

rich people parties

@polymerwitch FWIW it's a fundraiser and marketing for the museum which means more people can enjoy their costume and other art collections.
