I've been drifting toward craving a new online social presence that isn't centered on mastodon or the fediverse as we know it. I'm starting to solidify what I want to work toward having in the future:

1) Matrix for having secure instant messaging and chat rooms. I think the structure of Matrix is also such it can actually help build small communities (like we see with discord)

2) I also want a jitsi server. The past year has shown me how great video conferencing can be when you need it. Having voice and video options to quickly work with a group or chat with friends is nice.

3) a public facing blog to post things I want shared widely and is not meant to be private at all.

This meets my goals of having a private community building space for friends, comrades, and other small groups.

It also meets my needs by having a place to post things publicly.

I feel like mastodon/pleroma kind of try to be a middle ground where I kind of post things privately, but not really private at all.

So, for the rest of this year I want to setup my own home matrix server with jitsi.

I also want to continue building my myco blog platform Ostayae that uses ActivityPub to post publicly, but with advanced subscriber/subscription federation that has features beyond RSS. Ideally it will also have RSS and email digests.

I feel like masto is trying to both be a public and private mass social media, and it's not delivering really at either.
